Community Resources

The GHHS strives to assist and educate the public about the humane treatment of animals and has created several programs that offer assistance.  This section details many of our programs and also provides information about other humane organizations in or around the state of Alabama.

Animal Surrendering

The variety of reasons people surrender their pets is just as varied as those pets we inevitably end up sheltering here at the GHHS. We make every attempt to help the community but often run short on space. Here at the GHHS we accept nearly 1000 cats and dogs a year and try to find each and every one a new home. The animals we accept must be healthy and have a good temperament in order to be adopted.

The Greater Huntsville Humane Society is a no-kill shelter and therefore is highly sought after by the public for their pet’s placement.  Due to limited space, we cannot always accept your pet immediately. Below are a few guidelines that will allow us to take your pet into our shelter and ensure that he or she gets a wonderful new home.

  • Our surrenders are by appointment only when space is available
  • We take in pets Tuesday through Friday only from 11:00 - 3:00
  • We encourage everyone to bring in their pet’s veterinarian records. This enables us to determine what their needs are and expedites the adoption process.
  • Cats and kittens should be FELV/FIV tested prior to coming to us as we do allow our cats to free roam.

For additional information on surrendering a pet contact our Director of Operations, Melissa E. Hull at mhull@greaterhuntsvillehumanesociety.org.

Marci

We are unable to receive animals that are aggressive or have previously bitten someone. For more information about stray animals, please look in our animal partnerships section

Humane Education

Our humane education program helps teach children and young adults about the humane treatment of pets and the healing bond pets and people share. The GHHS has presentations aimed for specific age groups and includes a tour of our shelter and informational material. The goal of the GHHS is to educate a younger generation to be more conscious of the treatment of animals and our responsibility to protect these pets. To schedule a humane education tour, call 256.881.8081 ext 11. We can also visit your school, church or workplace to present information on pet safety, animal welfare and the importance of spaying or neutering pets.  Please schedule a tour today!
