About Us
Our Mission
The Greater Huntsville Humane Society (GHHS) is dedicated to furthering the humane care and treatment of animals and providing adoption services for the unwanted and homeless.
Our Past, Present and Future
The Greater Huntsville Humane Society was incorporated in December 1969 as a non-profit, volunteer organization with 39 charter members. The goals of the society were to promote the humane treatment of animals, maintain an animal shelter with an active adoption program, cooperate with other agencies in the protection of animals, and conduct a humane education program. In the beginning, members and volunteers operated out of their homes and eventually acquired two acres of land with an old house on Johnson Road. Volunteers remodeled the house and it served as the center of operations for several years. On April 23, 1989, the new shelter opened and was dedicated to Ludie G. Richard, one of the society’s most generous supporters. Over the years, the shelter has seen many changes and faced many challenges but always remained committed to serving the displaced pets of Huntsville.
As we continue to grow, the Greater Huntsville Humane Society remains pure to the original vision established 40 years ago. With the help of a Board of Directors, Staff, Volunteers and generous donors we help find homes for over a thousand pets each year and remain committed to furthering the humane treatment and respect for animals.
Now in our 40th year, we celebrate our past and look forward to the future; always evolving but remaining constant to our mission of helping those that cannot speak for themselves.
A Look Back at 2009 Accomplishments
Our 40th Year was a great one. We met many goals, made great strides and positioned ourselves for an even brighter future. Some of the highlights of the year:
- Rebuilt an old garage on the property and turned it into a multi-purpose building; our Birthday Parties, workshops, and other group events are held here.
- Updated the large dog indoor kennels with new glass doors, new paint, and better lighting, creating a much-more pleasant environment for both the dogs and our visitors.
- Celebrated two fund raising successes with the much-anticipated annual Dog Ball and Pet Photo Contest; together they raised over $165,000 for the animals.
- Revived the Rock Your Paws event in Big Spring Park, preceded by a series of related Yappy Hour parties held all over town.
- Realized a twenty percent (20%) increase in sales at our Thrift Store from the previous year, thanks to increased donations and the support of the community.
- Provided over 10,000 pounds of pet food to individuals with animals in need.
- Gave $9000 in aid to those who qualified for public assistance for veterinary care for their pets.
- Recruited and utilized over 200 volunteers who gave 6,000 hours of service to the shelter.
YOU can be a part of helping us ensure a successful 2010. DONATE TODAY. We welcome, and rely on, YOUR contributions of time, expertise, and financial support.
